…. and then there was ONE!

The birth of the ‘West Berkshire Countryside Society’

WHAT AN EVENING!!  General Meetings, Annual or Emergency, do not often attract crowds – but this one did!

On Thursday 19th January 2012 in The Oak Room of Upper Bucklebury Memorial Hall history was made.  The Friends of the Pang, Kennet and Lambourn Valleys, The Bucklebury Heathland Conservation Group and The Pang Valley Conservation Volunteers, by the unanimous vote of a (probably) overcrowded gathering of their members, became the West Berkshire Countryside Society!

A Steering Group was instructed to go away and sort out the nuts and bolts of the merger – the combining of the assets, the writing of a constitution etc – for the membership to consider and ratify at an Annual General Meeting in May.  In the mean time we will continue to ask members to use ‘Friends of the Pang and Kennet Valleys’ on cheques, although we will use the new name on all other documents.

As Dick put it in his introduction, “United we stand, divided we fall”. The new unified group will make us more effective at looking after our countryside and will make it easier for outside bodies – such as West Berkshire Council, The AONB and Natural England – to identify and work with us.

Watch the website for more information. It will still be www.pangandkennetvalleys.org.uk for the moment.  Re-naming the website is only ONE of our problems!
