News Items:
 

  • After several years as Treasurer Jenny Ainsworth is stepping down. The committee would be delighted if a new volunteer would come forward to take over the role of Treasurer to the Friends of Pang, Kennet and Lambourn Valleys.

  • There are two new leaflets on the download page. Both show veteran trees of the future, one for Bucklebury Common and the other for Ashampstead Common. There is also a document on the download page giving the answers to the tree challenge in the Bucklebury leaflet.

  • Our newsletter, Upstream, for January to March can be found on the download page.

 


    

Events Diary

 

 

For outdoor events please wear suitable footwear and clothing. Practical tasks start at 10am and usually finish around 4pm, unless otherwise stated, so bring a packed lunch. All tools are provided. April 2010

Saturday 17th - Rushall Manor Farm, Bradfield - GPS for Veteran Trees Course - 9:30am
A day school to examine the advantages and pitfalls of using GPS for positioning Ancient and Veteran Trees.  Theory in the morning with practical recording in the afternoon. Course fee £5. Bring a packed lunch, drinks provided. Outdoor boots and clothing essential. Places are limited so booking is essential to JillButler@woodlandtrust.org.uk

Saturday 24th - Paices Wood - Woodland Inspiration Craft Day - 10.00am
Make your own nature inspired crafts with the help of local artist Jo Cauldrick. Please call the office (0118 930 5336) to book a place.

Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th - Paices Wood - Newt Survey with West Berks Youth Services

Saturday 4.00 pm - 6.00 pm - Sunday 10.00 am - 12.00 pm

Find out all about newts and how to find them! We will set traps on Saturday evening and see what we’ve caught on Sunday morning. Please call the office (0118 930 5336) to book a place.

Sunday 25th  - Ashampstead - Walk in an Ancient Landscape - 11:00am
Join Dick Greenaway in exploring the landscape, wildlife and history of Ashampstead Parish. About 6 miles with two modest hills. Starting from Childs Court Farm (Grid ref: SU 575 751). Bring a packed lunch. Well behaved dogs welcome.

Tuesday 27th  - Paices Wood - Bonfire bash! - 10.00am
A day of burning the brash left over from all those task days when it rained too much! There will be plenty of tasty bonfire treats. As this task may be postponed if the weather is bad, please call the office (0118 930 5336)  to register your interest and we will let you know if this happens.

Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd  - Rushall Manor Farm, Bradfield - Bluebell Weekend - 11.00am – 6.00pm
Come and enjoy the bluebells, wood anemones, primroses and violets. Self-guided walks and refreshments are available. A donation of £5.00 per adult and £2.00 per child is invited in aid of Multiple Sclerosis.

Tuesday 4th - Victory Room, Bucklebury - Friends AGM - 7.30pm – 9.30pm
The AGM of the Friends, followed by a talk by Dr Edward Hewitt from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology.   Any items for the agenda please contact the Project Office 90118 930 5336).

Saturday 8th - Englefield Estate & North Street - Afternoon walk with Ray Clayton - 2:00pm
Join Ray Clayton for this 3-4 mile afternoon walk which includes some of the permitted paths on the Englefield Estate.  We start alongside the deer park, returning through the small hamlet of North Street.  Quite open country, so bring a drink and wear a hat if it is hot weather.  No dogs please.  Meet in the car park behind Englefield Estate Office, Englefield Road, Theale. Tuesday 11th - Paices Wood - Drab, Grizzled and Dingy Walk  - 1.00 pm
A walk around Paices Wood in search of some of it’s flying residents.  Meet at Paices Wood car park, which is accessed through Youngs Industrial Estate.

Saturday 22nd - Paices Wood - Reptile Safari - 10.00 am
A chance to see some of the country parkland’s reptilian residents. Please call the office (0118 930 5336) to book a place.

Sunday 23rd – Lambourn - Stones and Horses RIGS Walk – 11.00 am
A joint 'Friends' and Berkshire Geoconservation (RIGS) walk to look at the geology, history and wildlife around Lambourn. Racehorses will feature strongly! Meet Lesley Dunlop and Dick Greenaway at Lambourn church (Grid ref: SU 326 790) and bring a packed lunch. There is an optional short cut home on this walk avoiding one of the two steep hills. Walk lengths 5 miles (ish) or 3.5 miles.

June 2010

Wednesday 2nd - Hosehill Lake - Half Term Pond Dip - 11.00 am - 1.00 pm
An opportunity for a close up look at some of the creatures living in the wildlife pond at the Hosehill Lake reserve. Drop in anytime between 11am and 1pm.

Saturday 5th - Stratfield Mortimer - Pond Dipping - 10:00am – 12:00pm
Come and have fun pond dipping at the Fairground pond at Mortimer.  Meet at the Fairground car park opposite the Horse and Groom Pub (Grid ref: SU 655 645) in Mortimer.

Wednesday 23rd - Bucklebury Common - Nightjars and Glow-worms at dusk  - 8.30pm – 10:00pm
Join Tim Culley for a late evening walk on Bucklebury Common. Stout footwear is necessary. Meet at Angel’s Corner, by the Scout Hut.  Grid ref: SU 550 688.

Thursday 24th - Pangfield Farm, Stanford Dingley - Evening Wildflower Walk – 6.00pm
Join the ‘Friends’ on a walk to see the wildflower meadows at Pangfield Farm in bloom.  Free admission, although donations of £2 per person (family discounts) are invited.  Grid ref:  SU 565 718

Tuesday 29th - Kings Copse, Bradfield - Glade Clearance - 10:30am
Spend the day clearing invasive Himalayan Balsam at Kings Copse to help maintain the native woodland flora. Meet at Kings Copse House (Grid ref:  SU 579 707) which is accessed via Jennett’s Hill.

July 2010

Sunday 4th – Hungerford - Above and below Hungerford.  – 11.00am
Join Lesley Dunlop and Dick Greenaway to explore the geology, landscape and history of the countryside around Hungerford.  Meet at Hungerford Common car park (Grid ref: SU 342 683). Bring a packed lunch.  The route is 7 miles or 11 km of easy walking with only one short steep hill. Dogs will be on leads for much of the way.

Tuesday 6th - Leyfield Meadow - Meadow Management - 10:00am
Come and help Dick Greenaway cut and clear the bracken invading this flower rich grassland.  Meet at The Cottage, Ashampstead Common.  Grid ref: SU 5768 7511.
